Follow the instructions given at your appointment first. Placement, skin, jewelry, and the way your tattoo or piercing was finished can change the details, so appointment-specific guidance takes priority.
Tattoo care
Protect the work while it heals.
01
Keep it covered.
If your artist applies Tegaderm or a similar second-skin film, leave it in place for about 3–4 days unless your artist gives you different instructions. Remove it early if the seal breaks, the tattoo becomes exposed, or the film causes persistent irritation.
02
Remove it slowly.
Wash your hands, then remove the film under warm running water or in the shower. Peel it slowly back over itself, keeping the film low and close to the skin rather than pulling straight up.
03
Wash & dry.
With clean hands, gently wash the tattoo using lukewarm water and a mild antibacterial or fragrance-free soap recommended at your appointment. Rinse fully, pat dry with a clean paper towel, and let it finish air-drying.
04
Moisturize lightly.
Apply a very thin layer of the fragrance-free lotion your artist recommends. Use only enough to keep the skin comfortable; the tattoo should not remain glossy, wet, or heavily coated.
While the tattoo heals
Do not soak in baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, or other bodies of water.
Keep the fresh tattoo out of direct sun.
Avoid tight clothing and repeated friction over the area.
Do not pick, scratch, or pull at peeling skin or scabs.
If the bandage irritates your skin
If the film causes persistent burning, a spreading rash, or obvious irritation, remove it and move into the normal wash-and-moisturize routine. Seek medical care if the reaction is severe or worsening.
Long-term care
Once the tattoo is fully healed, regular sun protection and normal skin hydration help preserve contrast and color over time.
Piercing care
Clean, protect, and leave it alone.
01
Wash your hands.
Only touch the piercing when necessary for cleaning, and always begin with clean hands. Do not twist or rotate the jewelry.
02
Use sterile saline.
Rinse with sterile wound-wash saline as directed by your piercer, then gently dry with clean disposable gauze or a paper product. Avoid homemade salt mixtures and harsh antiseptics.
03
Reduce pressure.
Avoid sleeping on fresh ear piercings, snagging jewelry, tight clothing, headphones, helmets, and other pressure that can prolong irritation.
04
Keep the jewelry in.
Do not remove or change jewelry during healing unless your piercer advises it. Return for any recommended downsize appointment once swelling has settled.
What to avoid
Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and soaking during the early healing period.
Keep cosmetics, hair products, ointments, and alcohol-based products away from the piercing.
Do not pick crusting or force jewelry to move.
Ear curation and downsizing
Multi-piercing projects often heal in stages. Follow the appointment plan and return when your piercer recommends a fit check or post downsize.
Questions or concerns
Reach out early.
Mild redness, tenderness, swelling, flaking, or itching can occur during normal healing. If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, spreading, unusually hot, or you are concerned about infection or an allergic reaction, contact a qualified healthcare professional.
